The vast number of automated weather stations in FTS’ North-American network reside in extremely remote locations. The cost of visiting the site to diagnose or fix a problem by helicopter, by ATV or on foot (or a combination thereof) often exceeds the cost of the equipment at the site.
For more than 3 decades we’ve been designing extremely rugged equipment that can function continuously, in any location and in any weather condition.
Our experience has taught us what really happens in the wilderness, where a moose, or a grizzly, or a hunter can easily disable a solar panel, or an ice storm can snap an antenna in half. It has also taught us that you don’t become the worldwide leader in fire weather technology by letting these real-world mishaps get in the way. The data our equipment collects is critical to public safety, so it must be measured, recorded and transmitted 24/7.
