An Overview — FTS Hydrological Monitoring

EXPERIENCE
FTS’ Hydrology experience began in North America’s challenging west coast mountain watersheds. Today we provide fully integrated weather, stream gaging, groundwater, and water quality monitoring systems for many government agencies - comprehensive solutions that set industry leading standards for installation simplicity, durability, and reliability. Building on our leadership in fire weather, FTS Hydrology leads the industry with innovative dataloggers, sensors and easy to use integrated systems. Combined with sophisticated Environmental Database Analysis and Management Software (EDAMS); StreamTrac™, and a wide range of industry leading telemetry options, FTS specializes in early warning networks, municipal networks, continuous real-time turbidity and suspended sediment monitoring systems. With three decades of monitoring experience, providing thousands of fully integrated stations across North America, FTS combines the industry’s best products, customer service and field support to make our customer’s successful. Our systems are known for their rock solid performance, ease of operations and plug-n-play simplicity.
SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES
Real-Time Turbidity Monitoring Stations
For compliance monitoring associated with construction and land use activities, rather than operate expensive labour intensive manual grab programs with complex logistics, HR management, and quality control challenges, why not used automated instrumentation to collect high quality continuous instream turbidity? At FTS we are the instream turbidity monitoring experts and provide cross sectional monitoring arrays with realtime data collection and processing for comparing upstream and downstream suspended sediment levels with alarms. Consultants using our plug-n-play systems value the simplicity, reliability and operational information that FTS systems can provide.
Suspended Sediment Monitoring Stations
FTS supplies the only turnkey suspended sediment monitoring (SSM) stations in the world. We are the experts and have been promoting the merits of turbidity triggered sampling (TTS) for over a decade. Using our DTS-12 digital turbidity sensor with its unprecedented performance as the cornerstone, the station combines stream gauging and continuous instream turbidity monitoring with a sophisticated data logging algorithm and control capability to trigger an automated pump sampler to collect strategic grab samples during turbidity events. Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) samples are used to establish SSC turbidity rating curves, which combined with discharge, provide the best estimates for suspended sediment loads. This technique has recently been endorsed by the USGS and today our system is widely used in North America among sediment monitoring groups. It is ideally suited to monitoring watersheds with sediment and nutrient impairments in order to provide a direct measure of the impacts, and how best management practices (BMPs) are doing.
Stream Gauging Stations. FTS has installed numerous stream gauging stations in some of the most challenging mountains, streams, and rivers of North America.
Water Quality Monitoring stations. FTS has installed numerous multi-parameter water quality monitoring stations, in remote and community watersheds throughout North America.
H2 Hydrological Data Logger. The H2 datalogger breaks new ground in combining leading edge capabilities with unparalleled ease of configuration and set-up. The Quick Touch configuration system, fully integrated power management, integrated lightning protection, and military-style quick connectors simplify even the most sophisticated monitoring applications.
DTS-12 Turbidity Sensor. The DTS-12 is the world’s best instream turbidity sensor. It has been extensively proven in the field, typically exhibiting less than 2% annual drift, with high accuracy and is ideal for long-term remote site deployment. Suitable for drinking water reservoirs and sediment-laden streams it has the dynamic range and sensitivity for a wide variety of applications.
Telemetry. FTS manufactures a wide array of some of the world’s most effective telemetry technologies, with a specific emphasis on simplicity of installation and operation, reliability, and low power requirements for remote site use.
SOFTWARE
StreamTrac. FTS StreamTrac provides powerful tools for hydrological data analysis and management of hydrometric monitoring networks. StreamTrac supports all aspects of data archiving and analysis, from integrated field and lab reports for water quality analysis through to rating curves, automated collection of data (requires AutoCaller) from telemetered monitoring stations and alarm reporting. Sophisticated modeling tools support efficient and comprehensive analysis of hydrological events including built-in tools for sediment load analyses using the latest threshold sampling techniques.
AutoCaller. FTS AutoCaller software provides sophisticated, automated network management and data collection tools. Features include the ability to work with all current FTS communication technologies as well as powerful data exporting tools to facilitate integration with other databases and environmental information management systems.
